The University of Cyprus (UCY) leads one of CiROCCO EU Project's most demanding pilot tasks: Task 4.3, Desert Dust Storm Event Monitoring in Cyprus — operating in the municipality of
Idalion, one of the most dust-exposed urban environments in the Eastern Mediterranean. UCY contributes 33 person-months, focusing on the development and operation of a robust, accurate early warning system for Desert Dust Storm (DDS) events. Cyprus sits at the intersection of European and African air masses, making it a uniquely important monitoring location for dust transport from the Sahara and Arabian deserts. UCY also leads Task 1.3 — GDPR, Gender Balance and Ethics Management — ensuring that CiROCCO's data collection and citizen engagement activities are fully compliant and ethically sound. Bridging atmospheric science, environmental health and legal compliance, UCY is one of the most strategically cross-cutting partners in the consortium.
